Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross featuring what3words

TomTom and what3words have teamed up with Mitsubishi Motors to make finding adventure easier than ever. The addition of what3words to the new restyled Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross means drivers can more easily identify, share and navigate to any location in the world using just three words. What’s more, in a world first, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation will be the first car company to offer what3words offline.

How Does what3words Work?

Google Maps is undoubtedly the most advanced navigation system with a free license. However, there is another kid on the block where you don’t even need to be connected to find your way around. So how does it work?

What3words is pretty simple actually as they’ve mapped out the world into 3×3 metre squares giving each one a unique three-word address. Every combination of words is unique which means drivers can point to a specific square by saying or typing three words instead of entering an address. In theory, this makes setting the navigation to an exact location much easier when using what3words compared to Google Maps.

The system is only available on models with TomTom navigation software and the new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross will be the first to offer the service offline. That means you don’t need a mobile or data connection to navigate which is particularly useful for drivers living in remote areas with poor cell reception, and for those off-the-grid adventure seekers.

Clare Jones, CCO of what3words, added, “We are thrilled with our collaboration with TomTom and excited for Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross customers. They’ll benefit from a groundbreaking technology which will enable them to find and navigate to any address they choose in the world even when completely offline.”

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Setting The Trend With TomTom

In another major news update, what3words signed a deal with HERE Technologies to integrate its services into the navigation software preloaded on cars currently using its maps. More than 150 million vehicles across the world are using HERE maps which means what3words will become a more prominent feature.

According to a press release from what3words: “Drivers can also rest assured that they will always arrive at exactly the right destination, with AutoSuggest technology prompting with intelligent suggestions to identify and correct mistakes. In a world-first, what3words works offline the Eclipse Cross. No app, data or cellular connection is required to input or navigate to a what3words address.”

Over the years Mitsubishi has delivered some impressive cars for markets around the world. A few standouts have made their presence known and that includes the Outlander, Triton, Pajero Sport and the most recent Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross.

Considering the wide-open spaces, perhaps it’s no surprise that Australia and New Zealand get first dibs on the new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross with off-the-grid navigation at their disposal. At the same time though, there’s no confirmation whether it will be available in South Africa but follow our blog to stay up to date on all the latest news.
