Is The Mitsubishi Xpander Coming To South Africa?

Mitsubishi Xpander

Current Mitsubishi Xpander

The Mitsubishi Xpander was first introduced in 2017 in Indonesia and since then, it’s expanded into other countries such as the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. Now, it appears as if Malaysia is next according to the chief executive officer at Mitsubishi Motor Malaysia (MMM), Tomoyuki Shinnishi.

He stated that the Mitsubishi Xpander is not just an important model for MMM, but across the ASEAN region as well. As of June 2020, the car reached combined sales of approximately 256,000 units. Shinnishi confirmed that they are introducing this impressive seven-seater crossover in Malaysia later this year.

The Seven-Seater Sporty Mitsubishi Xpander Cross

Early reports suggest that the Mitsubishi Xpander Cross will get its power from a 1.5-litre MIVEC DOHC 16-Valve engine delivering 104 hp at 6,000 rpm and peak torque of 141 Nm at 4,000 rpm. The powertrain will be coupled to either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox pushing power to the front wheels.

In terms of dimensions, the seven-seater Mitsubishi Xpander Cross is 4,475 mm long, 1,750 mm wide, 1,695 to 1,730 mm high, depending on the model. The car’s wheelbase measures 2,775 mm with an impressive ground clearance of 200 or 205 mm.

The Mitsubishi Xpander Cross is effectively a more rugged version of the MPV range. It combines comfort and pleasant driving experience with practicality thanks to ample space for seven passengers. A second and third row of seats can also fold down to add even more loading space.

Exterior Design And Off-Road Ability

The Mitsubishi Xpander Cross is not only more rugged but it also has a sportier look. This all comes courtesy of a somewhat tweaked Dynamic Shield grille which now features a large brand logo and reshaped louvres. Based on the selected model, you can expect LED headlamps, halogen fog lamps, 16-inch two-tone alloy wheels, shark fin antenna, LED rear lights, reverse sensor and a rear defogger.

Expected colour options for the current launch is:

  • Quartz White Pearl
  • Sterling Silver Metallic
  • Graphite Grey Metallic
  • Jet Black Mica
  • Red Metallic
  • Deep Bronze Metallic

Even though the Mitsubishi Xpander has front-wheel drive without low-range gears, Mitsubishi confirmed that it will be able to manage a wide range of terrains with confidence.

Mitsubishi Xpander Interior And Safety Features

Inside the Mitsubishi Xpander Cross is all the technology you’d come to expect. This includes a touchscreen main display, Bluetooth and voice control, air conditioning, airbags sunroof, electrically adjustable seats, tyre pressure monitor, head-up display and a power tailgate.

When it comes to safety, the Mitsubishi Xpander doesn’t disappoint as it’s built on a RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body with enhanced collision safety performance. Safety features include the following:

  • Power window timer
  • Auto-off function headlight
  • Auto door relock system
  • Lane change turn signal system
