So you love to drive bakkies, but would rather own something that is as reliable as the Toyota Hilux, as exciting as the Ford Ranger and yet still has plenty of luxury features such as the Volkswagen Amarok? Well then, maybe it is time that you took a test drive in a Mitsubishi Triton, because this exciting pickup is more than just a bakkie, it is an exciting addition to any family or fleet and will have you enjoying an adventurous life each and every time you get behind the wheel of this fun to drive vehicle!
There is simply so much to like…
Before we get to show just how “crazy good” this bakkie is, let’s take a look at some of the impressive specs:
Engine Type and Size: 2.4-litre turbo-diesel
Max Power Output: 133 kW
Max Torque: 430 Nm
Transmission Type: 6-speed manual
Fuel Consumption: 7.3 Litres per 100 km*
Performance: 0-100 kph in 10.4 seconds
We were given free access to put a Group1 Mitsubishi Triton 2.4DI-D Double Cab 4×4 through its paces for a day, and boy oh boy was it fun! For starters, this 2.4 diesel engine is an engineering marvel that impressed us with its tractability and allround refinement. From its peak outputs (see above) to its low noise and surprising fuel economy this is a vehicle that is both family friendly and fleet viable in every way.
The Triton is as impressive inside the cabin as it is under the hood, you just need to look at some of the convenience features, which includes a Multi-function Leather Steering Wheel with Audio and Cruise Control and Bluetooth with Hands-free Voice Control, to see just how comfortable the Mitsubishi engineers want your driving experience to be. Additional convenience features include:
- A touch-screen Radio/CD and MP3 Player
- Dual-zone Automatic Air-conditioning
- Back and front Electric Windows
- USB and Accessory Sockets
- Leather Seats
- And lets not forget the Electrically Adjustable Driver Seat
And now for the fun part!
They say a picture is worth a 1000 words, well if that is the case then this video of a Mitsubishi Triton demolishing one of the most rugged uphill muddy roads you’ll ever see is probably worth a million!
Now that is true adventure! Although we could not find a hill to match the one in the video, we still gave our Mitsubishi a proper offroad run around Durbanville and Stellenbosch and not once did it come across as wanting. Far from it in fact, as the Mitsubishi’s Super Select drive modes of 2H, 4H, 4Hlc and 4LLc, which we would like to point out includes low range and the ability to lock both centre and rear differentials, completely and utterly blew us (and the terrain) away. Not only was it easy to use, but it put all of the other 4×4 vehicles we encountered on the trails to shame. This was of course helped by the triton’s 215mm ground clearance, 28 degree approach angle and 22 degree departure angle.
And with all of this comes:
An impressive list of safety features, which in our book makes this one of the best bakkies in South Africa. These include but are not limited to the Triton’s Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution Body Construction, Airbags, Side-impact Protection Bars, ISOFIX Child Seat Anchors (a prerequisite for any good family vehicle), Active Stability Control, Traction Control, an Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, a Brake Assist System, a Hill Start Assist System, integrated Daytime Running Lights, a Rear View Camera and lets not forget the Speed-sensing Auto Door Lock System.
Our conclusion?
Buy it, own it, drive it and enjoy it! This is about the best bakkie advice anybody will ever give you, so get down to Group1 Mitsubishi and chat to us about how we can help you get into a Mitsubishi Triton today.
