Mitsubishi Corporation has invested in wireless EV charging

If you’ve been considering purchasing an electric vehicle to lessen your impact on the environment, you’ve likely come up against one of the major concerns most South African motorists have in this regard – namely, how difficult will it be to charge your vehicle on the go? The infrastructure for this type of thing is sadly still lacking in many countries to a large degree.

This is why we’re very proud to announce that our parent company Mitsubishi Corporation is taking great strides to make wireless charging systems a real possibility for EV drivers around the globe. By investing in WiTricity, a company that leads the way when it comes to this type of future-proof tech, Mitsubishi’s Urban Development Group looks beyond auto applications, to consider the possibilities it holds for the smart cities of tomorrow.

According to Mitsumasa Icho, who spearheads the Urban Development Group, the shift to electric vehicles and autonomous driving will only be fully possible once wireless charging becomes commonplace thanks to the exceptional technology developed by WiTricity. The company is the main player in this field and has been staking its claim very strongly over the past few years.

Wireless charging is able to ‘fuel up’ EVs by transferring a current between a grid-connected pad on the ground, and a receiving pad on a vehicle by means of a magnetic field. Currently, WiTricity holds 1000+ patents related to this type of tech, including those purchased from Qualcomm in 2019.

Their aim is to make power transfer as efficient and fast as a conventional plug-in and to provide a single charge pad design with no moving parts that facilitate charging for sports cars, sedans and SUVs regardless of ride height. Users will be able to park and charge conveniently, safe in the knowledge that position allowance compensates for parking misalignment; and that FOD (Foreign Object Detection), LOD (Live Object Detection) and PD (Position Detection) offer advanced protection and ease of use.

In time, the tech will be developed and adapted for countless other uses in the smart cities of the future, to aid sustainability and usher in an era of clean energy. Collaborating with trailblazers like these is just just one of the ways in which Mitsubishi strives to provide its clientele with the means of innovative motoring.
