In America, they put safety warnings on pins (sharp) and takeaway coffee (hot). Sounds silly, but they take their safety standards seriously. This is why it is a big deal that the 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross has received a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating. Again. Since 2019.
This is the highest rating a car can get from the USA National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. And while there may be certain differences between the American Eclipse and the Saffer Cross, at heart these are the same vehicle. It means your Eclipse can transport you and your family as safely as a car can be.
So how did the Eclipse Cross get this high rating again? The standards are raised every year, so what will the new Eclipse have?
The Eclipse did very well in the crash tests, getting four stars in both the driver and passenger side frontal and rollover tests. In the combined side-crash, it received five stars.
But safety tests are no longer just about how badly or not the test dummy is bashed about. It also takes into account how well the car is equipped to help you avoid crashes and other nasty experiences.
Measures taken to deal with these include a RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body, 7 airbags, ISOFIX Child Seat Anchors, Daytime Running Lights and Dust-Sensing Headlamps, ABS and EBD, Side-Impact Protection Bars, Hill Start Assist and Brake Assist, Active Stability and Traction Control and Active Yaw Control. You also get Electric Parking Brake and Electronic Power Steering, keyless operating and central locking with motion lock, anti-theft protection device, front and rear parking distance control and a rear view camera. So, very, very safe.
Safety is of course very important, but what about the nice things? Surely you want a multi-function leather steering wheel with audio and cruise control, hands-free Bluetooth, a head- up display, a large infotainment screen, leather seats, heated front seats and paddle shifts?
Add to that the ease of CVT gearing, a 110kW engine – either 2.0-litre or 1.5-litre turbo. The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross was, from launch, a world-beater. And over time, it has gotten better and safer. If you drive an Eclipse, well done. If not, why not check the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross out and take it for a test drive? See what the fuss is all about?
