2019 Mitsubishi Triton SA Bound

Mitsubishi has done it again with a special edition, sporty Triton Athlete which is based on the international Triton Adventure X-development and the Mitsubishi Triton 4×4 automatic. There is a mixture of old and new inside and out which further adds to the allure.

This top-of-the-range Triton Athlete leaves no stone unturned in terms of design, technology, and performance. It looks incredible with modern, flashy design details including a two-tone, orange and black, body kit which compliments the interior trimmings.

The Triton Athlete is the perfect choice for individuals and families who love adventure and enjoy sporty lifestyles from surfing, paragliding to mountain biking and motocross. Not only does it look more athletic than its counterparts, but it also offers improved towing capacity of 3.1 tons. This means towing any lifestyle equipment is as easy as can be.

Mitsubishi Triton Athlete Exterior and Interior

Imported from Thailand, the Mitsubishi Triton Athlete comes standard with 17-inch black powder-coated diamond-cut alloy wheels. It also includes a sports bar, integrated tailgate spoiler and black mouldings on the side steps, exterior mirrors, door handles, and bumpers. Customers can choose between a white or grey Triton Athlete.

The Mitsubishi Triton 4×4 is equipped with all the gear for off-road expeditions. This includes a good 205mm ground clearance and an easily selectable 4×4 mode. It also comes with low range and a rear diff lock to help manage the rougher and tougher conditions with ease.

Some of the impressive interior features include the two-tone interior design with orange and black leather seats and trim which nicely match the body kit. It also has a multi-function, adjustable steering wheel with cruise control, shift paddles, an upgraded instrument display, USB and Bluetooth connectivity, dual climate air conditioning and a keyless ignition system.

The cabin offers sufficient luxury and class for a bakkie and the quality plastic finishing also adds appeal. Well-placed switches and knobs make it easy to control all the functions while a handy centre console completes the package. The family-sized cabin has hectares of space and while the rear bench has sufficient leg and headroom.

Safety and Performance

Safety is the number one priority and with these specifications, the Mitsubishi Triton Athlete sets the bar high. In addition to ISOfix child seat anchors, it has 7 airbags, ABS with EBD, brake assist, stability control with traction control and hill-start assist.

The new Triton Athlete matches the ride quality of an SUV without compromising on the workhorse characteristics synonymous with double cab bakkies. The dynamic and sporty suspension means improved ride comfort and exceptional driving stability. This also reduces body roll, provides better handling response while ensuring a safer, quieter and more comfortable drive.

Mitsubishi’s latest version of the unique Super Select II four-wheel drive system is fitted to the new Triton Athlete, greatly improving cornering and maneuverability. Four drive modes give drivers more control in challenging weather conditions or on rough terrain.

  • 2H (2WD High range) provides a quieter drive and improved fuel consumption on normal roads
  • 4H (4WD High range) is selectable up to 100 km/h. It distributes torque in a 40:60 ratio between front and rear axles through a centre differential (CD). This results in safer driving in slippery conditions
  • 4HLc (4WD High range with CD locked) greatly enhances traction on sand, dirt and snowy roads. Torque is distributed equally between the front and rear
  • 4LLc (4WD Low range with CD locked) offers additional torque to navigate extreme off-road conditions

The Mitsubishi Triton Athlete has a 2.4-litre DOHC MIVEC 16 valve common rail inter-cooled VGT turbo diesel engine which is rated as one of the most efficient diesel engines in the world. The relatively quiet engine produces 133kW and 430Nm of torque with a 5-speed automatic transmission.

As far as pricing goes, the Triton Athlete comes in at R579 995, matching the price of the Triton Double Cab 4×4 Automatic. It also gets a 3-year/100 000km warranty and a 5-year/90 000 km. Service intervals are set at 10 000 km.
