It seems the long wait is over as the next-generation 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is more than a promise. The latest teaser photographs and leaked images show an American-spec car that strongly resembles the 2019 Engelberg Tourer Concept which builds on a theme seen in the 2016 PHEV GT.
The styling on the new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander looks contemporary and aggressive, which is much-needed to compete with its rivals in the highly competitive midsize crossover segment. But what about engine specifications, performance and features? Let’s take a close look at what you can expect.
2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Engine Specs And Performance
Considering the Mitsubishi and Nissan alliance, reports suggest that the non-hybrid 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander will use a Nissan engine. In return, Mitsubishi will provide its advanced PHEV system to Nissan for the new Qashqai.
Without any official report, and based on the Engelberg Tourer Concept and outgoing model, a new conventional petrol engine will likely be at the core of the fleet. A potential powertrain is the 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine (135kW/245Nm) from the new Nissan X-Trail which is better than the current Outlander’s 2.4-litre engine (124kW/220Nm).
Even with Mitsubishi developing cutting-edge PHEV technology, including high-performance variants, it remains unclear whether the new Mitsubishi Outlander will get a heavily upgraded hybrid system or keep the current set up paired with twin electric motors and a 13.8kWh lithium-ion battery.
Looking abroad, the Australian-spec model could get the 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine (110kW/250Nm), while the mid-size SUV will also continue to offer a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) giving at least 50km of electric driving range per charge.
Exterior And Styling
The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander looks set on getting a more striking design with an aggressive face, biplane grille and new headlight design as seen on the Outlander Sport and Eclipse Cross SUVs. It seems to be a trend nowadays where automakers mount the primary headlights lower than the indicators. Perhaps it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but it most certainly works wonders for the Outlander.
It’s also reported that the new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander will be chunkier and more bakkie-like, especially compared to the current version. Expect it to have the standard third row of seats which shouldn’t be too cramped considering the increased vehicle size. This means the recently updated Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross will be the automaker’s smallest offering.
There are no official images of the interior but considering inspiration came from the Engelberg Tourer Concept, it’s almost safe to assume what we can expect. The concept has a stunning interior with a range of high-tech new features and driver safety tech. In all honesty, it looks ready to be fitted to a production model and that means the final product could be much more modern than the outgoing model.
